Scoundrel Strategy: Weapon Management, Fleeing & Card Counting
Most Scoundrel games are decided by a handful of choices: which monster gets your weapon, when you flee, and whether you drink a potion now or later. This guide covers six tactics that make those choices easier. If you're new to the game, start with the Scoundrel rules guide first.
1. Manage your weapon like a resource
A weapon can only fight monsters equal to or weaker than the last one it killed. That makes the order of kills more important than the weapon's number.
- Use a fresh weapon on the strongest monster available. Killing a 12 first still leaves the weapon free to take on everything up to 12. Killing a 3 first shuts it out of everything above 3.
- Low weapons still earn their place. A 2 of diamonds against a 4, then a 3, then a 2 saves you 2 + 2 + 2 = 6 health compared with fighting barehanded.
- Don't swap weapons carelessly. Equipping a new weapon discards the old one and every monster stacked on it. If your current weapon still has useful kills left, keep it.
- Sometimes go barehanded. Taking 2 or 3 damage from a small monster can be cheaper than locking your weapon out of the monsters that matter.
2. Flee with purpose
Fleeing costs no health. The cost is that you can't flee the next room, and the four cards go to the bottom of the dungeon, so the monsters in them return later.
- Flee rooms with several high monsters and no weapon able to handle them.
- Don't spend the flee on a room you can manage. Save it for a real threat.
- Check the fourth card before you flee. The card you'd carry forward becomes part of your next room.
- Fleeing is also a way to get a better look at the dungeon. A fled room puts known cards at the bottom, so you'll know what's coming at the end.
3. Protect your health
- Don't drink potions near full health. Healing is capped at 20, and only the first potion in a room does anything. Extra healing is wasted.
- Use the carry-over slot. Leaving a potion as the fourth card keeps it available for the next room.
- Count the potions you've used. A potion in a fled room is still in the dungeon, so it isn't gone.
4. Count cards
Scoundrel has only 44 cards, so counting is realistic. Two groups matter most:
- The 8 high monsters: Jack, Queen, King and Ace of clubs and spades. Once they're all gone, every remaining monster is worth 10 or less.
- The 9 weapons: 2 through 10 of diamonds. If most have been used, your current weapon may be the last good one you'll see.
Judge progress by cards remaining rather than rooms. Being halfway through the dungeon with healthy HP is a good sign.
The game has a built-in Card Counter: open More → Card Counter, or press C. It shows every high monster, weapon and potion as in the dungeon, in the current room, or gone, plus the strongest monster still to come.
5. Play for score, not just survival
Winning with 1 HP scores 1. Your score is the health you finish with, so every point of damage you avoid across the whole dungeon counts.
- If you can track where a potion sits in the deck, plan to play it last. A final potion that would heal you past 20 scores 20 plus its value.
- If you lose, your score is your HP minus the value of every monster still in the dungeon, so getting further still helps.
6. Common beginner mistakes
- Using a fresh weapon on a weak monster first.
- Treating a weapon as flat damage reduction and forgetting it degrades.
- Hoarding the flee when a well-timed one would save more than 10 health.
- Ignoring the fourth card, which becomes the start of your next room.
- Drinking potions at 18 HP and wasting most of the heal.
Frequently asked questions
When should you flee a room in Scoundrel?
When a room has several high monsters and you have no weapon that can handle them. You can't flee two rooms in a row, so keep it for real threats.
Which monster should you hit with a fresh weapon?
Usually the strongest one in the room, because the weapon can then still fight anything weaker.
Should you drink a potion at full health?
Usually not. Healing is capped at 20. Carry the potion forward instead, unless it's the final card and would overflow, which gives a bonus.
How do you count cards in Scoundrel?
Track the 8 high monsters and the 9 weapons. The in-game Card Counter does this for you.
